about

Helsinki-based quintet Maan Tomu returns on their sophomore album, Valossa en näe pimeää, pimeässä valon nään. The album is released on digital platforms and vinyl on March 2 by This is not a dog.

The five-song LP is centered around two sprawling epics, "Kameli" and the over 14-minute titular track, which is described by the band as an “intense hunting trip” of sorts. Meanwhile – as its name implies – “Kameli”, (translating to “Camel”) takes the listener on a voyage to a sweltering desert, coated in sounds rooted in 60s psychedelic progressive rock. “Trans Vojakkala Express” is a largely acoustic continuation to “Kameli”, which lures the listener to a shamanistic trance whereas the album closure, “Kameli (Reprise)” briefly returns to its namesake’s vast landscapes. The minimalistic lyrics – sung in Finnish – are deceptively simple yet multilayered mantras, evoking thoughts of haiku-like poetry.

Guest musician Arttu Silvast provides a processed jouhikko (a traditional Finnish bowed lyre) on the title track as well as the otherworldly ambient piece “Metsälä Special”.

Since 2017, the band has been cultivating its blues-based psychedelic rock, influenced by folk, classic rock and psychedelia. Maan Tomu started out as a trio, with JP Saari on vocals and guitars, Staffan Sodergård on bass, Jussi Peevo on drums. Following the recording of their self-titled debut album, the group grew into a quintet, as multi-instrumentalists Joki Luz on flute, trombone and percussions, and Johannes Silvonen on trumpet and percussion joined the lineup.
